Manufacturing quoting software: the six categories, and how to choose

Manufacturing quoting software splits into six categories based on what it prices from and who it is built for: AI RFQ-reading and estimating, geometry-driven CAD quoting, should-cost simulation, fabrication cut-part quoting, ERP-embedded estimating and enterprise CPQ. The right one depends on how your RFQs actually arrive today and which system needs to own the resulting number.

This page groups tools into categories and does not rank them against each other; the best-of guide linked below does that comparison directly, with the same sourcing standard. We describe all six categories, but we only name tools in the three we have read closely enough to source every claim.

AI RFQ-reading & estimating

Reads the RFQ package as it actually arrives (drawings, scans, specs, email) and prices it with the shop's own rates, margins and history. Carries no cost models of its own.

Geometry-driven CAD quoting

Prices from an uploaded CAD file: geometry is analyzed and the shop's configured process rates are applied to produce a quote.

Should-cost / cost-engineering simulation

Simulates manufacturing across configured virtual factories to compute what a part ought to cost, mainly for design-to-cost and sourcing teams rather than for a shop producing its own quote.

Fabrication cut-part quoting

Prices flat-part fabrication work from cut geometry and nesting, with cut-time modeling against the shop's own machine and material rates.

ERP-embedded estimating

Quoting lives inside a full shop ERP alongside orders, scheduling, inventory and job costing. The estimate is typically entered by hand into the same system that runs the rest of the shop.

Enterprise CPQ

A general-purpose configure-price-quote engine that prices structured product and pricing records. It assumes the product and its options are already modeled; it does not read raw RFQ documents.

How to choose based on how your RFQ actually arrives

If your RFQs arrive as a mix of scanned prints, PDFs, spreadsheets and a forwarded email, and you want your own rates applied automatically, look at the AI RFQ-reading and estimating lane.

If your RFQs already arrive as clean model files most of the time, geometry-driven CAD quoting, or a fabrication cut-part quoting tool for flat-part work specifically, will get more out of that geometry than a document-reading tool built for 2D drawings and specifications.

If the job is deciding what a part ought to cost before it is designed or sourced, rather than pricing one customer's specific RFQ, should-cost simulation is built for that question.

If quoting needs to live inside the same system that runs scheduling, inventory and job costing, an ERP-embedded estimating module keeps everything in one place.

If you are selling a large configurable product from a price book rather than reading manufacturing RFQ documents, enterprise CPQ is the closer fit.
