How does quoting from 2D drawings work?

A 2D drawing carries several kinds of information at once: a title block with part number and material, dimensioned views, tolerance and GD&T callouts, and often a hole or feature table. Quoting from it means treating each of these as a different extraction problem, then reassembling the results into one structured feature list for pricing.

What does a 2D drawing actually contain?

A title block (part number, revision, material, finish, quantity), one or more dimensioned views of the part, tolerance and GD&T callouts attached to specific features, general notes, and often a hole or feature table listing sizes and counts. Each of these needs different handling, which is why treating a drawing as one undifferentiated block of text or image loses information a quote needs.

How does the title block get read?

As labelled fields rather than free text: part number, revision, material and quantity are extracted into their own structured slots, because a quote needs to know which one is the material callout and which one is the drawing number, not just that both strings appear somewhere on the page.

How do dimensions and features become a feature list?

Each dimension and callout is associated with the specific feature it describes, a hole, a bend line, a machined face, so a hole schedule becomes a count of holes by diameter rather than a list of numbers with no feature attached. On a flat-pattern drawing, bend lines and their angles are read the same way, tied to the specific bend they describe.

What happens when the drawing and a BOM disagree?

That is a genuine cross-check, not a rare edge case: a quantity, material or revision mismatch between a drawing and its accompanying BOM gets flagged for a person rather than silently resolved in favour of one source.
